SSG are proud to announce the launch of Search Green – a recruitment start-up serving the booming renewable energy sector.

Led by Dale Howell and Omar Sheikh, Search Green seek to become renowned for their value-led approach – providing five-star services with a personal touch – and their ambitions don’t stop there. 

I caught up with Dale to find out a little more about his journey to this point, and what he sees for the future of his business. 

Let’s start with something easy, tell us a little about yourself? 

I have 10 years working as an international head-hunter, working in leading markets with top industry energy players, supporting candidates from all over the world and have made placements in 6 continents. 

From a personal note, I have 2 children and a baby on the way due near to Christmas (Christmas Eve to be precise). Outside of working I enjoy travelling and visiting new and unique places including little towns that we may have clients based in. It’s always nice to experience different cultures and local ethos. 

How did you become a recruiter? Was a conscious decision, or did you end up a recruiter by chance? 

I become a recruiter through a Customer Service apprenticeship, it was an opportunity for me to learn about the industry with minimal risk to my role and be able to grow professionally and personally prior to joining full time into the industry.

What sector do you work in? 

Search Green operates within the Renewable Energy sector with our key focuses being Solar, Energy Storage and Energy Supply & Trading. 

What’s your favourite thing about that sector? 

My favourite thing about this sector is its amazing resilience and growth shown across the world. The sector has faced lots of different issues over the course of the past 2-3 decades and now it is just on a trajectory to grow immensely, in turn helping people into jobs and the world to be a less polluted and brighter place. 

What’s the most rewarding part of your job? 

The most rewarding part of my role is hearing feedback from clients and candidates on a job well done; There is nothing more satisfying that helping someone through the difficult journey of identify a life changing new role, and while doing this, helping them to a high level where trust and a professional relationship is built. 

What do you consider the biggest challenges facing recruiters today? 

I think the biggest challenge to recruiters today are 2 things; firstly the economical climate, recruiters are a luxury to have to most companies and therefore can be considered an unnecessary cost to an organisation. Secondly, the competition; there are so many head-hunters and recruiters out there especially when working on an international scale, so it is always important to operate with your values in mind and ensuring your business stands out above the rest in how you conduct yourself. 

You’ve just launched your new business with SSG. Why did you want to become a recruitment business owner? 

I wanted to become a business owner to help fill the gaps I see in the recruitment market. The recruitment market naturally has relatively low overheads but an extreme pressure on profitability causing a lot of issues with job security, job satisfaction and opportunities for people. Search Green will operate differently and will reward success and provide opportunities to those who need it, not just externally but internally too. My plan to help the social environment that surrounds us will be showcased during my journey as a business owner.  

As you now know, running a business can be like trying to keep a lot of plates spinning. What was it about working with SSG which made you choose us? 

The reason we chose to pursue an opportunity to partner with SSG was due to the support they provide and the pressure they aim to relieve when setting up a business. Like any major change, setting up a business can be a stressful time, so anything that helps that transitional phase was seen to me as a great added benefit. 

How would you describe the process of starting your own recruitment business with SSG? 

The process was smooth, our ideas were listened too and put into practice (within reason of course!)

What scared you the most about running your own business before you took the leap?

The scariest thing about setting up a business for me is trust. Trusting in your own capabilities to make it work, trusting that your values are right for being a successful business owner and trusting in your chosen market to be the correct choice to elevate the business to the position in which can support your organisational ambitions. 

How do you feel about it now? 

I feel confident and relaxed, that I can just focus on doing what I have done for the past 10 years with the support I have around me. 

What was the best part of seeing your new business come to life? 

All of it, seeing the website, the logo develop, the content put into place and just everything about your dreams and ambitions coming to life. 

Where do you see yourself (and your business) in 12 months’ time? 

I see us having started to build our reputation in the industry, having hired additional staff providing job opportunities and beginning to put in place our larger ambitions. 

What would you like your business to be renowned for? What sets you apart from your competition? 

Mainly I would like my business to be seen as different to the typical recruitment agency. I want employees to feel valued, feel like opportunities are always available to them and generally to inspire loyalty and respect within the industry. 

If everything goes to plan, what ambitions do you have for your business? 

If everything goes to plan, I see our business being multinational, providing opportunities for people who need a second chance in life and offering a service that is bespoke and beyond the norm for our clients.
